Primary objective of the job: 

 

To advise and provide guidance to the company on a range of privacy, data protection and technology related regulatory and compliance matters for Digicel’s range of products and services. The role will support the growth and success of the business through assisting with the introduction and the implementation of a global privacy program.

Both legal knowledge and technical fluency are highly desired as this role will work closely with security, technology and engineering, marketing, business and operations teams.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Support Group Head of Privacy in design and implementation of privacy program
  • Act as Data Protection Officer (or Deputy) for some markets, as may be required by applicable laws
  • Provide proactive, commercially-focused and results-driven legal and regulatory support to the Group functions which support the Caribbean and Central America as required
  • Provide strategic legal and regulatory guidance to senior management, legal counterparts and other business units on privacy and data protection issues, law & trends
  • Co-ordinate the efforts of Group business units and markets in the implementation of essential elements of the applicable privacy/data protection regulation, such as the principles of data processing, data subjects’ rights, data protection by design and by default, records of processing activities, security of processing, and notification and communication of data breaches
  • Oversee the maintenance of records required to demonstrate data protection compliance
  • Perform or oversee initial and periodic privacy impact assessment, risk analyses, mitigation and remediation
  • Support a program of awareness-raising and training to deliver compliance and to foster a data privacy culture
  • Support the data incident response and data breach notification procedures
  • Advisory support on key legal and regulatory issues
  • Supporting initiatives to automate and improve contracting processes including the provision of self-service tools for the business
  • Provide training to the business on key areas of risk as required
  • Support the training and development of the local L&R team
  • Support special projects and initiatives as required

 

Academic Qualifications and Experience Required:

 

 

  • Tertiary qualifications in law and admission to practice in a common law jurisdiction
  • Minimum 5 years post qualification experience in private practice and/or corporate environments, however we will consider applicants with less experience if they can demonstrate strong abilities in other relevant areas.
  • Experience advancing projects in a multi-stakeholder environment
  • Demonstrated interest in privacy or corporate security (completion of privacy courses or CIPP/CIPM/CIPT/CISSP certifications). Any other related post-graduate qualifications will be considered an asset
  • Demonstrable experience, knowledge and/or in-depth understanding of data privacy legislation (in particular GDPR)
  • Experience in a similar type of role in a multinational business (dealing with DPAs, governments and industry bodies, cross-border transfers) will be considered an asset
  • Experience in managing data incidents and breaches
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity risks and information security standards
  • Experience in the digital and/or telecom industry desirable
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain a high degree of confidentiality, respect, trust and credibility at all level
