Primary objective of the job:
- Supporting the growth and success of the respective businesses through the provision of professional legal and regulatory advice (with particular emphasis on this) and services across the following markets: Guyana, Antigua, Anguilla, and Monserrat
- The position will be based in Jamaica and it will be Counsel’s principal area of focus. However, as this is a regional position looking after several Islands, there may be a requirement to travel to meet both internal and external stakeholders. The role holder should therefore have the ability to travel on short notice and remain flexible in respect of the length of time that may be required outside the usual place of business
- There is also likely to be a need for working outside of the usual contracted hours in order to meet regulatory and commercial deadlines, as well to accommodate different in time zones between the different Caribbean Islands, or external stakeholders situated in the US, the UK, and Europe
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Addressing regulatory risks and opportunities for the business including:
- Maintaining strong engagement and relationship with regulators and government agencies to promote the interests of the business;
- Protecting the business from value destructive regulatory and legislative interventions;
- Actively participating in regulatory and public consultations to shape outcomes for the business;
- Advising management on current and emerging public policy and regulatory issues;
- Working closely with Government Relations Lead to co-ordinate lobbying on current and emerging public policy and regulatory issues;
Academic Qualifications and Experience Required:
- Tertiary qualifications in law and admission to practice in at least one English speaking Caribbean Island where Digicel has offices/presence;
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in leading private practice or as in-house counsel;
- Broad experience spanning all aspects of corporate, commercial and regulatory issues, ideally in the telecommunications or ICT sector;
- Demonstrated ability to engage with and shape the thinking of key external stakeholders on significant public policy and regulatory issues;
- Strong track record of adding value through the provision of pragmatic and commercial oriented legal advice;
- Demonstrated ability to operate successfully in a fast-moving, change intensive and culturally diverse environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high volume of workload, keeping up to date with instructions, and ability to work under pressure and on strict deadlines.
