Job Title: Database Administrator
Primary objective of the job:
The primary objective of the Database Administrator is to administer, secure, and optimize the organization's database environments - predominantly Oracle, with supporting responsibility for Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL. Ensuring high availability, performance, data integrity, and recoverability across on-premises and Azure-hosted infrastructure.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Install, configure, patch, and upgrade Oracle databases (12c/19c and later) in standalone and high-availability configurations
- Configure and manage RMAN backup and recovery strategies; perform database restores, cloning, and refreshes across environments
- Implement and support Oracle Data Guard for disaster recovery, including standby creation, monitoring, and switchover/failover testing
- Monitor and tune database performance using AWR, ASH, and OEM Cloud Control; optimize SQL, indexes, memory, and storage to meet SLAs
- Administer Microsoft SQL Server instances, including backups, maintenance plans, Always On availability groups, and troubleshooting
- Support PostgreSQL databases, including installation, configuration, backups (pg_dump / pg_basebackup), replication, and maintenance
- Assist with deployment and management of databases in Microsoft Azure (Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, and IaaS VM-hosted databases)
- Manage database security: user provisioning, roles and privileges, auditing, encryption, and compliance with security policies
- Perform capacity planning, storage management, and proactive housekeeping (tablespace management, archiving, log maintenance)
- Provide on-call support for production incidents; resolve database outages and performance degradations within agreed SLAs
- Support application teams with schema changes, data migrations, refreshes, and release deployments (Data Pump, SSIS, scripting)
- Maintain accurate documentation of database configurations, procedures, runbooks, and architecture diagrams
Academic Qualifications and Experience Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
- 3–5 years of experience as a Database Administrator in a production environment
- Strong hands-on experience administering Oracle Database (12c/19c), including RMAN, Data Pump, ASM, and Oracle Enterprise Manager
- Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL administration
- Familiarity with Microsoft Azure database services and hybrid cloud concepts
- Solid Linux administration skills (Oracle Linux / RHEL preferred): bash scripting, file systems, storage, networking basics, cron, and log analysis
- Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) / Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) or Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) certification is an asset
Functional Skills:
- Strong SQL and PL/SQL skills, with the ability to write and optimize queries, scripts, and stored procedures
- Proficiency in backup/recovery planning, disaster recovery concepts, and high-availability technologies (Data Guard, Always On)
- Understanding of database security best practices, access control, and audit requirements
- Ability to automate routine tasks using shell scripting; exposure to Ansible, PowerShell, or Python is an asset
- Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical issues in simple terms to non-technical stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a production support environment
Working conditions:
- Predominantly 8am – 5pm; may be required to work outside the set work hours
- Hybrid-based with cross-functional collaboration
