Primary Objective of the job
The OSP (Outside Plant) Field Officer is responsible for managing, coordinating, and executing all activities related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of the physical infrastructure leading to buildings and customer premises. This includes fiber optic cables, conduits, poles, handholes, and cabinets. Timely execution of fault repairs also falls under this scope.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Fiber Route Planning & AutoCAD Mapping
- Conduct field surveys to identify feasible routes for fiber deployment.
- Prepare and update detailed fiber route maps, trenching plans, and duct layouts using AutoCAD and or ArcGIS.
- Create permit drawings aligned with municipal standards for submission to government authorities.
2. Field Deployment, Supervision and Construction oversight
- Oversee/Supervise trenching, duct laying, pole installation and fiber blowing/pulling.
- Manage underground and aerial cable laying operations
- Complete OTDR tests for MDU, Second Splitter and submit to QC
3. Fiber Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Monitor OSP fiber health and coordinate preventive maintenance.
- Respond to fiber outages and fiber cuts, support fault isolation and repair with field teams.
- Coordinate with NOC and field teams for repair and preventive maintenance.
4. Service Delivery, Quality Control and Documentation
- Use GIS and network management tools to log last mile fiber data.
- Oversee day-to-day activities of service delivery fiber contractors responsible for trenching, ducting, splicing, and installation.
- Conduct field inspections to ensure work meets technical specifications and project timelines.
5. Inventory, Asset Management and Compliance
- Track and manage field assets such as splice closures, handholes, ducts
- Report month on month on dispatched assets, including O&M cables used for fault repairs and MDU onboarding.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations
Education & Job Experience:
- MBO Level 4 degree
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience performing a similar role / duty.
- Experience of ticketing systems and dispatch software
- Proven ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced changing environment
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent planning, prioritization and organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal & written communication skills
- Demonstrated collaboration, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Analytical, problem solving & root-cause analysis skills
- Experience in and with the mobile telecommunications sector would be considered a valuable asset.
